Vintage Costumers opened in 1976 in Seattle, founded by Gloria Hoefflin as a quirky vintage boutique. As murder-mystery dinners and adult Halloween parties grew through the 1980s, the shop turned its focus to costume rentals.
Cyd Hand began doing costume repairs here in 1996 and took over the business after Hoefflin passed in 1999. When the Seattle building was demolished for housing in 2017, Cyd moved the entire collection north to Everett, where the shop still stands.
The collection has been assembled over more than forty years — estate sales, thrift stores, online auctions — and most of the period garments are still fabricated by hand, on-site. It is an unhurried way to run a costume shop, and it is the whole point.
